Rangiora Centre Details

About Us

Having taught and lived in the area for over twenty years Bill and Miriam Barker purchased the franchise in 1999 after it was originally started in1995. We have both taught for over 35 years and have a wealth of experience in working with students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Our main centre, relocated in 2002 is in the heart of Rangiora (High Street),and has easy access and ample off street parking. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. The smaller Kaiapoi centre was opened in 2004 to relieve the pressure of numbers and is similarly sited in the main street, (Williams Street).

OUR TUTORS

We employ up to 10 teachers each year. Students work with one fully qualified, experienced and vitally interested tutor in a group of up to three students. This enables difficulties and questions to be addressed quickly, during the one hour twenty minute sessions. We see a wide range of students for a variety of reasons for catch up, consolidation and extension. Many students are high achievers with diverse interests, including sporting and cultural activities. Years II to 13 NCEA English and Mathematics are catered for with specialist high school teachers. Miriam and three of our staff have Seabrook McKenzie qualifications in teaching children with Specific Learning Difficulties. Miriam has a particular interest in Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and related learning difficulties. Bill’s particular interest is in development of mathematical skills up to year 11. All staff are dedicated qualified teachers giving much care and thought to the planning and progression of their students.

What We Do

OUR STUDENTS

Kip McGrath offers tutoring for those in years 1 – 10 requiring sound understanding in the basic subjects of reading, spelling, mathematics and English.

As well we offer tutoring for year 11-13 students in English and mathematics.

Age range: Normally year 1 to adults.

Kip McGrath Education Centres provide back-up for the school programmes and follow closely New Zealand curriculum.

OUR INTERVIEWS

We always look forward to assessments as these provide many insights to a child’s scholastic achievements, personality and learning style.

The challenge for is us to design a program that will give just the right balance of successes and challenges for the children.

The assessment is free.

Mostly these are in school time lasting about an hour. This gives us the time to carry out our testing program and to discuss all the issues. It gives your child

time to assimilate this new environment and begin to relax.

Bill and Miriam carry out all the initial assessment. Finally we plan the initial tutorial and the direction of tutoring.

For all primary and many early high school students we automatically check their reading, spelling, writing, mathematics, as well checking eyesight and hearing.

Senior students however mostly discuss their needs directly with their tutor.

OUR MATERIALS AND PROGRAMS

Our programs are computer based, supported by booklets and home work especially designed to reinforce activities already carried out in tutorials.

Our computers are linked to a printer where programs related to the student course may be generated, and provide personalised dated home work.

A varied range of activities is undertaken designed to suit the individuals leaning style.

These include computer programs with sound input, written work with an emphasis on neatness and presentation, as well, visual and concrete materials are used. This provides flexible graded, well consolidated programs. A small amount of homework is given, arising from the session and is marked with the student the following week.

Most importantly these very extensive programs are ably supported by our experienced and talented teachers in a relaxed caring atmosphere in which independent thinking is encouraged. The result:- pleasurable, valuable and successful learning.

OUR SESSIONS

Individual tuition is taken during the school day.

Group sessions are all after school Monday to Friday.

Group size is normally 3 students.

FINALLY

We see a diverse range of students from widely varying backgrounds. Tutoring is available throughout the day allowing many home- schooled students to attend during school hours. One family of four lives in Moscow where the boys attend a French speaking school. They have tuition when they return to their local home for holidays. Another boy lives in the Chathams and attends during their off season. A severely sight impaired student attends, supported by back up from the foundation of the Blind.
