About Us
At Kip McGrath Oamaru we want you to reach for the stars and keep going. At Kip McGrath, Oamaru, we instil self motivated work ethics that we hope will carry over into their every day lives. At the Oamaru centre we cater to many learning styles and needs. We also go on excursions during the year because education is beyond the classroom too.
Structure and routine are very important to our students progressing in their levels. We design individualised programmes after an initial assessment which is completely FREE. When a student starts with us the programme is explained to them and as we progress changes are made to it depending on their progress. Some students stay with us for many years so our programmes are varied to make them interesting and fun.
At Kip McGrath, Oamaru we are willing to travel to reach your children. We also have satellite centres in other towns. All our tutors are qualified teachers and are constantly being re-trained in the curriculum. Kip McGrath follows the New Zealand system and we enhance what your children are learning at school.
At Oamaru, we want your child to have a brighter future and sometimes that means that caregivers too wish to learn how to read and write,so we also run evening or day courses for adult literacy. At Oamaru we run a variety of programmes, all you need to do is ask and we will tell you what is available at our centre.
You may ask who is Pauline Hilhorst the Oamaru Centre, Director.
She is a New Zealand Secondary trained teacher in English, Classical Studies, Russian Literature, Social Studies. She has also gained University Level Mathematics. Her specialist training was in accelerated learning and gifted children. She has spent a total of 18 years either tutoring or teaching children of all ages here in New Zealand and Overseas. She is also a licensed Real Estate agent, something she did to fill in time and just gain some more qualifications.
She has recently returned from Greece where she spent the last ten years teaching English as a foreign language to people of all ages and socio economic status. She spent the first five years on the island of Crete and the rest in Central mainland Greece. As a teacher you come across a cross section of society and she found that this was very obvious in the areas that she taught. Imagine if you will, arriving to work on the back of a tractor(1940's) and your students walking for an hour or two to come to class. A real eye opener but that does not stop you from teaching, it just makes you more determined to make sure your students get the best out of the time they spend with you.
She recently returned to New Zealand and decided to carry on the same style of teaching here at Kip McGrath, Oamaru. She expects her students to put in the same amount of work that she does in teaching them and all her students are expected to complete or at least attempt all of their given home work. Why home work, you may ask. This is needed to reinforce what has been taught and to revise information that has recently been learnt.
Pauline Hilhorst also collaborates with specialists in learning disabilities, psychologists and behavioural opticians so that she can provide the best possible service to her students.
